The Bad Guy

Ann Coulter on O’Reilly (4/27/07)

“I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.” – Rudy Ray Moore

Ann Coulter is an amazingly easy target, which is why I don’t talk about her much. It’s always the same scenario: Coulter says something wildly callous, cruel or factually wrong, the media goes nuts either condemning or defending her, she tells everyone it was a “joke”, and then we all get bored and wait for the next bat-shit crazy thing she spouts. At this point I do not find myself shocked or enraged by her and have no urge to write angry missives denouncing her. In fact, I’ve come to terms with the woman and her antics in a very “Circle Of Life” kind of way. It is her job to make broad, sweeping, ignorant statements. It is her job to perpetuate the myth of the “Left v. Right” paradigm. It is her job to be the rodeo clown for her side, so why get mad at her for it?

One could be mad because he or she disagrees with her. One could take personal offense at what she says. Or, one could make the case that her views represent the ugliest extremes of the “Right” in our country and a signpost to the dystopian future portrayed in Escape From New York. Personally, if I HAD to choose a reason to dislike her, I’d choose her unabashed love of jam bands. You see, Ann Coulter is a Deadhead, a Phan, a Widespread Panic lovin’, String Cheese Incident eatin’, worshipper at the tomb of Jerry. Yes, Ann Coulter is a hippie, a self-loathing hippie…But I’m not here to rail against a person who thrives on being hated or to vilify hippies around the world. Instead I am going to show you a clip of Ann Coulter from last night’s “O’Reilly Factor”:

As you saw, Ann was a little miffed at being compared to Rosie O’Donnell and pretty much threw it back in O’Reilly’s face (“No, Bill, YOU’RE Rosie!!!”). You also saw two highly paid windbags railing against windbags and windbaggyness in general. These are people who cannot stand being themselves, who have not come to terms with their own place in the world as nothing more than loudmouthed bullies. Ann Coulter is a hippie who cannot stand hippies, a windbag who cringes at being lumped in with other windbags, a woman who for all her great education, makes a living displaying her ignorance to the world. She is all too human, and I can hardly hate her for that. I’ll disagree with her on most anything, but I will not hate her.
