The Bad Guy

April Fools From Sen. Patrick Leahy

So I was watching “Meet The Press” today. On today’s program, Senators Patrick Leahy and Orrin Hatch had a grand old debate about the scandal at the Department Of Justice. Sen. Hatch described the mess as a tempest in a teapot, later downgrading the tempest to fit a coffe cup (but what size, Sen. Hatch? I drink quite a large cup of coffee). That’s not the big story here. Please read this quote (30 minutes into the broadcast) from Patrick Leahy:

“SEN. LEAHY: … I said I want to be able to get enough from this investigation so that if there is a new attorney general, we can ask questions, say, ‘Can you tell us under oath not to do this?’ You know, when they talk about—and also, Senator Hatch talked about, ‘Well, there’s only this one case down in Arkansas,’ that’s—that unfortunately falls into an amazing overstatement. The fact is that they used the Patriot Act, something that we’ve now repealed, to replace all of these U.S. attorneys.”

HURRAY!!! The Patriot Act has been repealed! Time to celebrate freedom from tyranny of the Patriot Act!!! Oh wait, it’s April Fools Day…Boy, is my face red. Damn you, Patrick Leahy!!!

But I am not tricking anyone when I tell you that he DID indeed say it. Go read the transcript. Go check, I’ll wait…

…You see, I’m not fucking with you. He did say it! Of course what he MEANT was that they repealed only the part of the Patriot Act that dealt with the appointing attorneys without confirmation. The rest is still there. But I’d like to send a message to Sen. Leahy. Do not say stuff like that on April Fool’s Day WITHOUT saying “April Fools.” It’s very tacky.
